Check your course software first

Most college software runs on a Mac — Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Zoom, Adobe apps, Figma, MATLAB, AutoCAD, Python, Java and Android Studio. A few engineering and architecture tools are Windows-only, including SolidWorks, ANSYS and Revit. If your syllabus depends on them, ask your department whether the college lab covers them before choosing a Mac.

How much memory and storage do students need?

8GB (MacBook Neo) — fine for school and basic college work.
16GB (MacBook Air M5) — the sweet spot for a 3–5 year course.
24GB or more — coding with many tools open, video editing, or local AI.
512GB storage minimum; cloud storage helps, but projects and videos fill drives fast.
